Just as Storm Claudia hit the north-west the previous evening, City swept United aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement 3-0 victory for the City coach's side due to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that clearly signaled their leadership claims as they consolidated their place at the league summit.

Back-to-Back Defeats for United

This outcome marked consecutive Women's Super League defeats for Skinner's side for the initial occasion since spring 2024, leaving them a sizable gap off the table toppers with their title hopes hanging by a thread.

United’s capacity to juggle domestic and continental soccer with a limited roster has been a hotly discussed subject since they qualified for the Champions League. Looking at the fixture list, it always felt like this was the period that would fully examine this capability. Unfortunately for the away side, they looked weary all game, the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having left its mark.

Lineup Adjustments

Marc Skinner had sought to make changes with a several alterations. Toone, Terland, Janssen and Galton all brought vigor, although the dropping of the high-performing Malard to the sidelines was questioned.

Manchester City, in contrast, have fewer workload worries. The City coach made one change from their most recent win over Everton with Hemp making her first start since recovering from a fitness issue.

Overpowering Start

They increased their cushion with another pair of goals just before the break. When Rose was able to advance through the center from central defence, the pitch became spacious for the hosts. The influential Casparij picked the ball up on the right side before providing a pinpoint ground pass for Bunny Shaw to tap home. Four minutes later, they had a third after a quick shift in the ball saw Lauren Hemp afforded the room to strike a shot home from outside the box.

Second Half

The most obvious adjustment came from the United manager at the interval as Melvine Malard entered for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was ineffective to shift the momentum of the match. Former City player Jess Park came closest, striking the woodwork, but the away team were lacking in ideas and did not manage to produce a single shot on goal.

The hosts, meanwhile, could have extended their advantage when a superb Vivianne Miedema through ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it was insignificant to the winning team. After failing to overcome any side who ended above them in the prior term, the manager's side now have successes against the Gunners and Manchester United to place them in a strong position after nine games.
