Tropical Storm Melissa is forecast to escalate to a uncommon category five storm as it veers in the direction of the Caribbean island, delivering dangerous rapid inundation and rock falls.

The hurricane, which had winds of up to 195 km/h as of 6:00 AM GMT, is currently turning toward the northwest in the Caribbean Sea and is anticipated to hit the coast by early next week, according to meteorological authorities.

Alerts of blackouts and damage to infrastructure have been announced as this storm generates up to 76cm of precipitation and storm surges as high as thirteen feet above normal levels. "Find safe refuge immediately," inhabitants have been urged.

Melissa is the 13th storm in the ongoing Atlantic season, which usually concludes in November.

Most Intense Cyclone Danger

A category five cyclone is the strongest type, with sustained winds of at least 252 km/h.

While this storm is projected to diminish in strength to a Category 4 cyclone before arriving at the island, authorities said there was "almost no noticeable change in the overall impacts" upon reaching the coast, and that the hurricane will be "equally strong" when it hits the country.

With storm-force winds and rain anticipated well in advance ahead of it passes over central Jamaica - including potentially the city of Kingston - advisories state that "safety measures need to be finalized quickly".

"Several days of damaging winds and intense precipitation are underway and will cause devastating and dangerous rapid water accumulation and many landslides," counseled meteorological officials.

The country's head of government the statesman stated: "I know that there are many Jamaicans who are concerned, who are deeply troubled, and rightfully so: concern is justified.

"However the optimal approach to manage anxiety and any apprehension and concern is to be prepared."

Locals are being advised to protect their properties with protective bags and plywood sheets, and to stock up on basic necessities.

Broader Effects

Warnings are also in effect for areas in the neighboring country encompassing the capital, Port au Prince, the Dominican Republic and eastern Cuba, where Melissa is anticipated to bring comparable impacts by the middle of next week.

Rock slides already being caused by the cyclone have caused two deaths in the country, according to emergency services.

Projected Path

This weather system is predicted to cross the island nation by Wednesday before moving through the Greater Antilles and out into the Atlantic Ocean.
